Originally designed by five time Open champion Peter Thompson, and situated a couple of miles inland from the famous old town of St Andrews, the Duke’s Course opened for play in 1995. It offers a fantastic parkland / heathland contrast to the abundance of top quality links golf available down the road.
This visually stunning course is known to provide a fair test of golf, with no blind shots, numerous bunkers located in exactly the right position to pose visiting golfers a question, very well managed rough and undulating but true running greens.
The 7th is perhaps the pick of the holes on the front loop – a long dog-leg left to right par 4 finishing with a view of St Andrews in the distance. The next hole is an attractive par 3, nicely bunkered, that is played slightly uphill to the green.
On to the back 9, and the 13th is definitely worthy of some recognition. Golfers can pause for a moment to enjoy the view on the tee before taking on the task of driving downhill towards a green guarded at the front by a large bunker. The closing hole is a tough one, as it climbs up the hill to another very well-protected green.
