Goswick has been selected by the R&A as a current Open Qualifying course and it features just the right blend of scoreable and demanding holes scattered throughout the round. Overlooking the North Sea, the wind is always going to play a big part your round at this intriguing links.
The course begins with a dogleg par 4 that bends around a small copse of trees, followed by a testing par 3 played over a large grassy hole. The rest of the opening nine require many risk and reward decisions to be made, such as on the 7th where players can opt to take on, or stay short, of a lone fairway bunker on the left of the fairway.
The stretch from 12 through to 15 is perhaps the most memorable on the return nine. The 12th brings Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle into view and has a blind approach. 13 is a well-protected par 3 played from an elevated tee, before we experience the classic 14th which has something of a punchbowl green. Hole 15 is a one-shotter with a stunning view of the coast where selecting the right club is vital.
All in all, Goswick is such a pleasure to visit. Don’t let its relatively remote location put you off from experiencing this links of such great variety for yourself.
