Rated as the ‘World’s Best New Course’ at the World Golf Awards, this amazing cliff-top links lies on spectacular terrain and, despite only opening in summer 2017, is currently ranked as one of the best in Portugal by the Top 100 Courses website.
The course provides an enjoyable test from the off, and the uphill opener isn’t the gentle introduction that you might hope for. The 2nd is typical of the set of excellent par 3s – not overly long but demanding accuracy to find the right section of the sloping greens
The homeward loop begins with a tight par 4 played downhill towards the ocean, before winding its way amongst the dunes, then up and over the hill, with each hole offering a slightly different but equally dramatic view. The finishing hole is simply stunning, and requires two excellent shots to carry the lake and find the green in regulation.
Higher handicappers should not be put off from visiting West Cliffs. There are several teeing options to choose from, and we would advise everyone to play forward – this certainly isn’t a course that uses length as its defence. If you do end up struggling, you can always just get the camera out and enjoy the stunning scenery.
